The US Army may start using IVAS mixed reality glasses as early as next year. What is known about this device?
At the end of 2018, Microsoft won a $480 million contract to develop a digital headset for US Army soldiers.
The device is based on Microsoft HoloLens mixed reality glasses, with which NASA recently broadcast holograms of scientists on the ISS. The gadget for the military was called the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), and among its main goals was to increase the “lethality, mobility and situational awareness” of soldiers in battle.
An earlier version of the HoloLens adaptive glasses used by the US military in training did not fit due to the size and viewing angle.
The revised IVAS gadget was supposed to be presented in 2020-2021, but the project was postponed for a number of reasons. The other day, the Americans confirmed that they will start using the device next year.
